Ok, it’s not exactly smack-bang in the centre of Melbourne but seeing as most decent retreat venues are in Asia, it’s pretty damn close! As a retreat designer, I believe Victoria needs more properties able to facilitate wellness retreats. And whereas this isn’t a full-blown wellness hotel, I believe it certainly is Melbourne’s best retreat venue.

I’m talking about Balgownie Winery Retreat in Bendigo, just short of 2 hours from Melbourne’s CBD. A unique location that offers a modern homestead and 15 glamorous tents. The bell tents are great for those in search of a digital detox experience. (Sign me up!) It ticks most ‘wellness’ boxes for us, which is why we’re organising a Yoga and Wine retreat here.

So why do I think this is Melbourne’s best retreat venue?

THE RETREAT VENUE IS SURROUNDED BY NATURE (AND VINEYARDS!)

Whether you stay in the modern homestead or tents, you are surrounded by lush greenery and (in the right season) gorgeous vineyards. Simply being surrounded by this beautiful scenery creates a sense of calm. It also makes a perfect base for nature walks, outdoor yoga classes and bicycle adventures. Need we say more?

THERE IS A YOGA DECK

Although not specifically created to be a yoga deck, I spotted a platform that would be very well suited for an al-fresco yoga sesh. There’s also plenty of space on the grass and along the homestead runs another deck where you can retreat for some early morning stretches or tea. If you’re lucky you’ll spot a kangaroo hopping past.

THEY SERVE DELICIOUS FOODS

Yummy meals, paired with beautiful wines, and an outdoor dining deck for after-class gatherings. Balgownie Winery Retreat can cater for all dietary needs and allergies and the staff will do everything to make sure your clients (and yourself) are well catered for. They also do an amazing cheese platter to go with your exclusive wine tasting. Yes please!

THERE IS A VINEYARD.. BECAUSE BALANCE IS KEY

I already spoke about the lush scenery around the retreat venue, and a special mention is in order for the surrounding vineyards. Nothing beats the view of blooming grapevines (in my opinion) under blue skies. Of course, every retreat is different. If you’re looking to incorporate a bit of balance in your retreat, a wine-tasting session in the afternoon will do wonders for socialising and added relaxation.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT’S PERFECT FOR A DIGITAL DETOX

The standard and deluxe rooms in the Homestead all come with a TV and Wi-Fi – and we recommend a ‘hand-your-phone-over-pouch’ if you’re planning a digital detox retreat. (They’re in the making so watch this space!)

For a proper tech-free experience, you should definitely hire any of the tents. Whereas the safari tents are more spacious and have an en-suite (ideal!), all categories are entirely TV- and Wi-Fi-less. This definitely adds to the retreat experience. After all, a retreat is meant to enhance health, happiness and relaxation. Digital devices shouldn’t be part of that.
