When was the last time you went a whole day without using your phone? We are relying on our digital devices for almost everything these days. Google maps to find your way to an appointment, Pinterest for the perfect recipe and so on… It’s damn handy when you’re lost in the middle of nowhere (though sometimes that’s part of the adventure!) but it becomes a problem when we’re just aimlessly scrolling our lives away.

Have you toyed with the idea of booking a digital detox retreat, but are not quite sure yet you can handle it? Maybe the below 5 reasons to have a tech-free break will convince you..

Improve the quality of your sleep

I’m sure we’ve all experienced multiple sleepless or restless nights. Having too much external stimuli prior to bed time will do that. Your phone will literally ‘tell’ your brain to stay awake, and the blue wavelengths from the screen will mess with your melatonin production (your sleep hormone). Using your phone at night will simply result in less shut-eye. You won’t have this input during a digital detox retreat, meaning you should sleep like a baby. And you know what, I’ve tried it and it works. When you return home from your wellness escape, make sure you ban your phone from your bedroom and don’t use it at least 2 hours prior to your beauty sleep.

A digital detox will reduce stress

If you’re anything like me, you have switched off your push notifications for emails, Whatsapp, Facebook etc.. And if you have, then I’m sure you agree that a ‘ping’ overload causes anxiety and stress. The feeling that you have 19 ‘tabs’ open in your brain isn’t a great one, and it certainly isn’t very good for your mental health. The need to instantly reply to messages and emails (or the feeling of guilt if you don’t reply immediately) increases our stress levels, and you’ll end up with a feeling of constant overwhelm. Embracing a digital detox retreat will allow your mind to full reset and repair. Upon returning to your normal life, make sure you dedicate certain times a day/week to reply to your messages. And if you hadn’t already, switch off those push notifications.. Trust me.

Why everyone should book a Digital Detox Retreat

More quality time for you

If I had to choose between an hour of Yoga or an hour of scrolling my time away, I’d obviously choose Yoga. But sometimes it’s like you get sucked in to the Instagram vortex or Pinterest labyrinth, right? Spending less time online means you’ll have more time to do the things you never have ‘time’ for.. Learn how to paint, make your own candles or simply enjoy a walk in nature. There are so many hobbies out there, and interesting people to meet IN PERSON. A ‘Ditox’ retreat will give you a sneak peek as to what it’s like to spend your days offline. And I’m pretty sure once you had a taste of tech-free life, you will become more mindful of your digital usage back at home.

A digital detox will make you feel happier

Yep, that’s a big statement. But it’s true. A recent study at Nottingham University has proven that a third of the messages we receive worsens our mood. Well that’s a bit sh*t isn’t it? Spending most of your time online can also make you feel socially isolated. Combine that with the added stress-load of having a smartphone and you’ve got yourself a miserable situation. Unplugging and switching off from your digital devices will make you feel more connected to the world around you. You will live more in the moment and appreciate what really matters.

Establish a better ‘digital habit’

Going offline (or preferable off-the-grid on a beautiful remote island – yes puh-lease!) is easier said than done. Especially if you’re an entrepreneur or have a job where you need to be constantly available (unfortunately there are too many of those these days!). Going on a digital detox retreat will make it far easier to relax and not use your devices. The stillness and feeling of calm that comes with switching off entirely should be a very good basis to make you less dependent on technology when you return home.
