Namibia, nicknamed the Gem of Africa, got its name from the Namib Desert, the oldest in the world. While English is the official language, Namibia was formerly a colony of Germany, gaining independence in 1991. You will find German colonial-era buildings in the Capital, Windhoek, and coastal resort, Swakopmund, and you will find delicious German cuisine in many shops and restaurants.
Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Namib Desert, Swakopmund has a laid back feel to it with palm trees, good restaurants and gift shops. For the more adventurous, there are a variety of extreme sports, from sky-diving to quad biking, fat wheel biking, ocean safaris, dune boarding and surfing.
Namibia is a year-round destination. You can expect hot, wet summers and cooler, dry winters. Generally, the days can be quite hot and the evenings and early mornings can be cool.
Whether you love animals, birds, nature, the ocean, the desert or extreme sports, Namibia has it all.
