Nihi’s philanthropic vision ensures better lives for local communities, preservation of the environment as well as cultural immersions for guests.
Visiting Sumba Island in Indonesia is an adventure on its own, and staying at Nihi Sumba Wilderness Resort, which has been voted by Travel + Leisure readers as the Nr 1 hotel in the world, is definitely a bucket-list experience. Retreat Here founder Sab had the pleasure to stay at this remote resort in the Indonesian jungle and shares her insight into life at Nihi Sumba.
Nihi’s two restaurants serve the highest quality of wholesome ingredients, whether it’s a nutritious breakfast, freshly caught fish on the bbq or delicious vegetables from the organic gardens. Tone your torso during a Power Vinyasa class, learn how to surf, book a private fitness session or get your sweat on with Mat Pilates. For an extra challenge, try The Sumba Method: A unique combination of traditional Bootcamp exercises and intense resistance training that will leave you revitalised throughout the day.
The island resort’s serene location, far from urban development, provides a great setting to allow yourself to simply ‘be’ and reset your mind. There are no TV’s in the individual villas, and guests are encouraged to connect with Nihi’s natural surroundings instead. Benefit from two complimentary yoga classes per day, or book a private session on the beach. Meditate to the sound of the ocean, nap in one of the hidden hammocks near the Boathouse or pamper yourself with a healing spa treatment. We highly recommend the Sumbanese Dream, a 120-minute blissful package that includes a foot bath, lavender salt scrub and a soothing body mask.
Nihi’s philanthropic philosophy is dedicated to give back to local communities and as a result, The Sumba Foundation was established in 2001. Aside from being the biggest employer on the island, a portion of Nihi’s profits is used to support community-based projects. Medical clinics, a Malaria training centre and over 100 water wells and water stations have been set up over the last fifteen years. The Foundation also helps feeding young children in malnutrition programs and provides lunch to over 1,000 school children twice a week. In addition, earnings from the recently launched “Sumba Warrior Collection” leggings and sports bras – inspired by Sumbanese textiles – generate a donation for The Sumba Foundation too.
An absolute must is the Nihi Oka Spa Safari. A full day of relaxation and me-time in a serene valley, where an open-air bamboo balé will be your treatment room for the day. Healthy, bush-cooked meals, stunning ocean views, private beaches and unlimited spa treatments will make for a peaceful day in paradise..
A true surfer’s paradise, Nihi’s premier wave, ‘God’s Left’, is located in front of the resort. The swell season lasts from April through October, with its peak in July and August. For non-surfers, Sumba island and its surrounding seas provide a private playground for many other activities: Jet ski, stand-up paddle, snorkelling, beach games, horse riding and private boat charters are guaranteed to keep you entertained. Cultural devotees can hike to local villages and markets, do a cooking class and visit communal farms whilst yogis can practice their sun salutations on the elevated yoga pavilion.

The resort is located on Sumba Island in Eastern Indonesia. Sumba is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands making it twice the size of Bali, with only one sixth of the population. The island is a 50-minute flight from Bali’s International Airport, where daily flights connect you with Tambolaka Airport, the closest airstrip to Nihi Sumba Island. From there, a one and a half hour journey awaits you to the resort.
To ensure a smooth flight connection, we recommend staying overnight in Bali upon departing Sumba, and booking your flights out of Indonesia for the following day.
Due to the remote location, it’s important to book flights well in advance. We can assist in booking all your international flights and domestic transfers to Bali and Sumba.
Sumba’s dry season is from April to November, with the green season lasting from December through March. The best time for surfers is from April through to October, with a peak in July and August.
